PREFACE
Congratulations! You have just bought the most modern and safest device to measure body temperature.
Thermofocus is convenient and easy to use. Indeed, it is the first "non-contact" medical thermometer. The device enables the temperature of adults and children to be taken without touching the skin, simply by moving the thermometer close to the forehead at the distance indicated by the device. With Thermofocus there is no need to place the thermometer in any part of your baby's body. A sleeping baby will not be woken when
Thermofocus is used nor will it be caused discomfort by the device if awake.
|
WARNINGS
Please read all the instructions carefully
before using the thermometer |
- Thermofocus is exceptionally easy to use to take a body temperature from a short distance. However, to avoid incorrect measurements, use Thermofocus in the same circumstances as conventional thermometers (fig. 1).
- Use Thermofocus in a draft-free room at a constant temperature between 60.8°F (16°C) and 104°F (40°C).
- If the thermometer is taken from a room (or drawer or cabinet) with a temperature different from that in which it is being used, wait for 10/30 minutes for the device to adjust to the room temperature before using it or make the calibration (MQCS) as explained at pag. 8.
- Do not use the thermometer on a perspiring forehead, as this may affect the reading (fig. 2). Read the appropriate chapter (page 5).
- Avoid taking the subject's temperature in a drafty location and wait for several minutes before taking a measurement if the subject:
- has exerted him/herself;
- has been in a drafty room or a place where the temperature is significantly different from that in which the thermometer is being used (fig. 3);
- has recently had a cold cloth or cold compress on the forehead;
- has recently been wearing a hat or a scarf;
- has been exposed to any activity which may affect the normal temperature of the head such as bathing, showering, shampooing, hair drying, etc.; also, holding a hand to the forehead for any length of time will affect the temperature reading.
- In the cases outlined above, wait a few minutes for the temperature on the forehead to stabilize. Alternatively, in the case of babies, the temperature may be taken from the navel or the armpit or on the neck (please read the appropriate chapter - page 5).
- The area from which the temperature is taken has a radius of about 3/4 inch (2 cm) around the point of light. It is very important to ensure that this area is not obstructed by hair or clothing and does not include eyes or eyebrows. If you change the point of measurement on the forehead you will get different results. For this reason, it is important that the two aiming lights are directed towards the middle of the forehead (between the nose and the hairline) and that the thermometer is held perpendicular to the forehead, taking care to hold aside any hair to clear an area of at least 3/4 inch (2 cm) around the light point.
- Oils or cosmetics on the forehead may give a lower temperature reading than the actual one, while hair obstructing the forehead may cause a slightly higher reading.
- The gilt guide wave (see fig. 8) of the thermometer is the most delicate part of the device. It consists of a small concave gold-plated mirror, which must be kept clean and undamaged. The accuracy of the reading may be affected if the guide wave is damaged or dirty.
- Avoid handling the thermometer, particularly the tip, more than necessary before taking a reading.
- Do not use the thermometer in contact with the ear or any other surface area of the body.
- Do not use the device near large electromagnetic fields such as found on a person that is starting a calling with a cordless or cell phones.
- Keep the device away from water and heat, including direct sunlight. Do not drop or knock the device, and do not use if damaged.
- Failing to follow these guidelines may result in excessively high or low readings which are in no way attributable to a faulty device.
- No harm can be caused should the aiming lights be accidentally pointed in the eyes: the beams are absolutely harmless!
- The device is a sensitive measuring instrument and should not be used by children or as a toy.
- Abrupt movement may not allow for enough data to give an accurate reading. Approaching a baby with the aiming lights already on may help, giving you enough time for a steady reading before the baby moves.
- If you need to take your own temperature, you can either use a mirror, or easily show a child of six years or older to use Thermofocus.
- Thermofocus never touches the body so there is no need for expensive disposable lens covers.

HOW IT WORKS
Thermofocus receives infrared emissions from the body, and in particular from the forehead. The forehead is the ideal part of the body from which to take a temperature because it is supplied by the temporal artery, which receives blood through the aorta and the carotid artery, guaranteeing a considerable flow of blood. Moreover, the forehead is the only part of the body close to the brain, which is not covered in hair.
The brain is the most important and delicate organ in the body, and the one most liable to damage from excessive temperature. Furthermore, the head is the first part of the body to modify its temperature in the case of a fever, whether rising or falling.
At every measurement, Thermofocus carries out every hundredth of a second, a sequence of 125 readings, which are amplified and computed by its sophisticated microprocessor, together with the value of the ambient room temperature, until the correct temperature is shown on the display.
It is important to be aware that no single "normal" temperature applies to everyone: each person has his/her own temperature, which changes not only during the day, but also according to certain physical activities undertaken by the subject (for example, if a baby has been crying). Moreover, an individual's temperature may be different in different regions of the body, and may be influenced by the ambient temperature and other external factors, depending on how the temperature is being taken. Until now, all methods of measuring temperature involved a certain inconvenience to the subject, which can be stressful to a mother seeking to know her baby's temperature but concerned about hurting or causing distress.
Because of the heat loss from parts of the body uncovered by clothing, the normal temperature measured on a person's forehead is usually lower than that of covered parts of the body.
Therefore, when the “on” (0700 series) or “face” (01500 series) buttons are used, Thermofocus' internal software automatically adjusts the temperature to provide a reading, which correlates approximately to the oral temperature. If you prefer you can change the setting from the oral temperature to the rectal. Note: when the device is on the Rectal setting the temperature displayed will be about 1°F (0,6°C) higher than the Oral setting. Please refer to the appropriate chapter (page 8).
In some version the device is showing the “core”temperature and you cannot choose neither Oral nor Rectal.
The normal temperature taken from the forehead of a healthy person, using Thermofocus, can vary between 95°F (35°C) and 100.4°F (37.5°C), but in an adult, it can also be below 95°F (35°C).
It is useful to know the normal temperature of each member of the family when in good health and at various times of day, in order to be able to detect a potential fever.
Fill in the following, simple chart and use it for reference. If you decide to consult a doctor, inform him/her of the type of measurement you have taken and the normal temperature under healthy conditions.

HOW TO USE THERMOFOCUS
Taking the temperature from the forehead
- Press and release the “on” button (models 0700) or the “face” button (other models).
- The thermometer will switch on and the last reading taken with the same button and the word “READY” will be shown, indicating that the thermometer is ready to take a measurement. After 2 seconds the display will show the room temperature, but the device is still ready to take a measurement.
- Open the protective cap.
- Press the same button again and hold it down: the two aiming lights will come on and the display will start to show the temperature, together with the symbol “face” (with the mod. 0700 this symbol is not shown).
- Hold the thermometer perpendicular to the middle of the forehead and move Thermofocus closer to or further from the forehead until a single point of light appears. If the thermometer is too far away from the forehead, you will see two blurred points of light (fig. 4). If the thermometer is too close, you will see two separate points of light. When you see a single point of light on the subject's forehead, the thermometer is at the correct distance for an accurate temperature reading to be taken (fig. 5).
- Release the button and holding the device steady until the lights flash.
- Read the value shown on the display. If necessary, you may take another reading immediately.
- Close the protective cap.
- After about 20 seconds of non-use the models 0700 switches off automatically, while the other models go on stand-by after 20 seconds and indicates the room temperature for 4 hours before turning itself off. If you want to make models other than the 0700 turn completely off, please read the appropriate chapter (page 8).
Sweating: taking the temperature from the neck
When the fever is going down the forehead may perspire making its temperature too low. In this case it's possible to take the temperature from a distance at the neck about 1 inch (2,5 cm) below the outer ear (auricle) for adults and 0,4 inches (1 cm) for babies (fig. 6). Proceed as directed for forehead readings (use the “on” button for 0700 models or the “face” button for other models). The accuracy cannot be guaranteed, but it can be considered a reasonable approximation of body temperature and an indicator of fever. This measurement is particularly indicated for adults also where the forehead reading is affected by oil or cosmetics.

Taking the temperature from the navel or from the axilla
(this feature is not available in the 0700 models)
If a baby is restless, crying or has a perspiring forehead, or if it proves difficult to take a temperature from the forehead, the reading can be taken from the belly, just on the navel, or from the axilla. It is very important to carry this out while the baby is normally dressed. Simply lift his/her clothes immediately before taking the temperature, in order to avoid heat loss from the belly. Measurement is not as accurate as the forehead measurement and should only be used as an alternative when a forehead measurement is not possible.
WARNING: taking the temperature from the navel or the axilla is recommended only for children or for adults when there is no hair to interfere with the reading.
Proceed as for a measurement on the forehead but use the “home” button and lift up, with your free hand, the baby’s clothes so as to have an area of at least 1-1/4” (3 cm) around the navel; when measuring on the navel, make sure the aiming lights converge directly on the navel, or a bit above it: the value which appears can be compared to the underarm temperature.
However, certain factors may affect this reading, such as the clothes being worn, the shape of the navel, digestive activity (length of time before or after a meal), or the thickness of the adipose tissue.
Therefore it is recommended that readings be taken when the baby is well and at different times during the day, noting the results on the apposite table and taking them as a reference when future readings are taken. Deviations from these reference values indicate a fever. The greater the deviation, the higher the fever. Remember to take the reading under the same conditions as the reference temperature: at the same time of day, at the same time before or after a meal, at the same ambient temperature.
Other measurements
Thermofocus can also be used to take other temperatures, using the same method as for the navel (use the “home” button). For the 0700 models, use the “on” button and subtract the value written on the silver sticker from the value shown on the display. For example:
1) the temperature of rooms, by pointing the device at a wall or piece of furniture;
2) the temperature of wounds, inflammations, scars (for medical professionals);
3) a baby’s bottle temperature (fig. 7) as well as baby food or bathwater temperature. In the last two cases, take the temperature quickly so that condensation does not form on the guide wave and on the sensor, and wait 30 minutes before taking any further readings.
MEMORY FUNCTION
In some models, there is a memory function, which allows the values of the last 9 readings to be recalled. To activate the memory when the thermometer is on, press the “Mem” button; the display will show the value of the most recent measurement followed by the number 1 and the RE (record) signal.
Press the button repeatedly and the display will show the second and third readings, together with the number 2, 3, etc, back from the most recent measurement.
CHANGING THE BATTERIES
1) Press inside the small button in the rear of the
device with a fingernail, as pictured in the fig. 9,
or with a pen. Lift the cover up.
2) Remove the old batteries and
discard safely.
3) Insert 4 new batteries (AAA alkaline)
taking care to insert them
in the correct position as indicated.
4) Replace the cover.
5) After changing the batteries wait
for about 20 minutes for the
device to stabilize or recalibrate.
6) Remove batteries if the device is not
in use for any length of time. |

CLEANING
CLEANING THE GILT GUIDE WAVE
It is important never to touch the gilt guide wave with your fingers or with any other object, as it is very delicate. For this reason, we recommend that you always protect the thermometer by closing its protective cap when not in use. If the guide wave need cleaning, lightly moisten a cotton swab with alcohol, and apply gently to the guide wave without pressing. Make sure that you clean away from the direction of the sensor, located at the bottom of the guide wave. Avoid cleaning with any other objects or liquids, which could scratch or in any way damage the guide wave. While cleaning, ensure that no liquid penetrates between the guide wave and the sensor.
CLEANING THE BODY OF THE THERMOMETER
Use a soft cloth slightly dampened with soapy water.
DO NOT USE the thermometer for at least 30 minutes after cleaning.
ROOM CALIBRATION (not available on the 0700 models)
If the device is handled for too long, or stored in a place where the temperature varies a lot, a countdown may appear on the display, depending on the model. This means that the unit will need time to stabilize and recalibrate itself. You have 3 different possibilities:
1. Automatic Quick Calibration System (AQCS): wait until the countdown comes to an end without touch it; if the room temperature continues to vary, or if the device is still being handled, the amount of time needed for the calibration will constantly be re-evaluated. As a result, the countdown will also reset itself. It is possible to take a temperature during the countdown, but accuracy is not guaranteed, especially if the temperature continues to rise. At the end of the countdown, the device is capable of measuring with enough accuracy. During the following stand-by the symbol “RE” will mean that the thermometer has been quickly stabilised.
2. Manual Quick Calibration System (MQCS): as an alternative you can quickly get an accurate room temperature when the thermometer is in stand-by and if the room temperature falls between 60.8 /104.0°F (16 to 40°C) by proceeding as follows:
1) press the “face” and “home” buttons at the same time. The word CAL will appear; open the protective cap.
2) Within 10 seconds, press the “home” button and aim the device at a wall or an object with a consistent temperature placed approximately 30 to 60 inches (80 - 150 cm) off the ground.
3) Release the button: the aiming lights will blink slowly and the display will then indicate the reading as a reference room temperature.
In order to be sure that this is the actual room temperature, aim the thermometer at a surface whose temperature remains stable and which is not influenced in any way by heat or cold (an inside wall, a piece of furniture; at any rate, an object which is neither in direct sunlight nor close to a lamp, a radiator, a window or in a draft). When using the thermometer in hospitals, do not hesitate to ask your supplier for the apposite Target Discs which you will then place in each room in order to mark the most appropriate area for the use of MQCS.
4) The thermometer is ready to take a temperature.
The MQCS may also be used when there is no countdown, should you need to change rooms which have different temperatures. This system also enables the thermometer to take good temperatures. Also in this case during the following stand-by the symbol “RE” will mean that the thermometer has been quickly stabilised.
3. Normal room calibration: in order to obtain the best possible measurement, let the thermometer stabilize itself completely. You have to wait 10/30 minutes according to the difference of temperature.

How to change the reading from CELSIUS (°C)
to FAHRENHEIT (°F), from ORAL to RECTAL and from
“ENERGY-SAVING” to “MAXIMUM PERFORMANCE” (or from “HOME” BUTTON ENABLED to “HOME” BUTTON DISABLED) or viceversa
Depending on the country of destination your thermometer has been set up to:
- display the temperature in Fahrenheit (°F) or Centigrade (°C) degrees;
- show “Oral” or “Rectal” reference;
- display off when in stand-by (“energy-saving” setting) or always on (“maximum performance” setting - not possible on the 0700 models);
- “home” button enabled or disabled.
However, you may change these settings to suit your own preference.
To change the setting, proceed as follows:
1. With the thermometer off (0700 models) or in standby mode (01500 models), press the “on” button (0700 models) or the “face” button (01500 models) and hold it down; after about 8 seconds, the visualization on the display changes showing in rotation the following combinations:
°C; °F; ORAL; RECTAL; “on” (home); “off” “home”;
(“on” and “off” - “home” means the display is on or off while in stand-by mode in the versions for consumer purpose, or “home” button enable or disabled in the version for professional purpose; these two possibilities are alternative each other according to the sector where the device is sold and cannot be present simultaneously in the same device).
2. When the preferred setting appears, release the button.
3. When the word “READY” appears the thermometer will be ready to take a measurement. You can change only one setting at a time.
POSSIBLE PROBLEMS AND THEIR SOLUTIONS
1) Display does not switch on:
- batteries are flat or low or have been incorrectly inserted; replace the batteries immediately or reinsert them correctly.
2) Two bright points of light are visible on the subject's forehead:
- the distance from the device to the forehead is incorrect; move the thermometer closer or further away until you see a single bright point of light.
3) The point of light is hard to see:
- there is too much light in the room; position yourself to cast a shadow over the subject.
4) The gilt guide wave is damaged or water has penetrated the thermometer:
- contact the distributor for assistance.
5) The temperature shown on the thermometer appears too low:
- check that the device has been used correctly (see “WARNINGS” section);
- check that the thermometer is held correctly perpendicular to the forehead, as shown in figure 5;
-check that the gilt guide wave is not dirty or damaged; if so, clean as indicated in the appropriate section of this handbook or, if damaged, contact the distributor.
6) The temperature shown on the thermometer appears too high:
- check that the device has been used correctly (see “WARNINGS” section).
7) The aiming lights remain constantly on after releasing the button, or the thermometer appears to be stuck or frozen in process:
- reset the thermometer by removing and reinserting the batteries.
