Thermofocus® is the first non contact (at-distance) clinical forehead thermometer in the world, result of a series of international patents. Body temperature is measured by pointing the THERMOFOCUS® thermometer at the centre of the forehead. The right distance between the forehead and the thermometer for a correct measurement is easily determined thanks to a LED system emitting two light beams (normal red light which is totally safe). As the thermometer is moved closer to the forehead, at the right distance (approx. cm 3) the two beams converge to form a single red spot on the skin of the forehead. Release the button and keep still the thermometer for less than one second until the lights flash and the temperature appears in the LCD display of the thermometer. There is no need to concern if the aiming lights are pointed into the eyes: the beams are absolutely harmless and are not laser lights. In case the subject, (i.e. a child) is moving, crying or has a perspiring forehead, it is possible to take the temperature aiming the thermometer on the navel or the neck, just below the ear. In case of old people with thick wrinkles on the forehead, a low supplying of blood may provoke a low temperature. In this case as well it is possible to proceed aiming the thermometer on the neck or on the navel (not recommended in case of not shaved areas). |

«The use of Thermofocus® for the body temperature’s measurement is certainly positive, above all for its reliability, for the precision of the obtained values and also because this instrument is easy and functional to use, that is the reason why it has immediately “conquered” a stable place in my gown […] The child is convinced to be playing a game and not to be doing of a displeasing medical examination. Thermofocus’ characteristic of “familiarity” certainly makes the temperature data collection easier, more comfortable and more precise also in children […]» Dr. Catia E. Thermofocus and VisioFocus no touch thermometers are helping health authorities screen people coming from areas at risk for Ebola virus as well as Mers |
|||||||||||
Thanks to their exclusive aiming system Thermofocus and VisioFocus are the only no touch thermometers able to indicate clearly the correct distance from the skin and the correct point on which the temperature has to be taken. This is very important if you want to use against Ebola (as well as Mers) a non contact thermometer, able to detect on travellers possible fever due to Ebola Virus (as well as Mers). Thermofocus and VisioFocus use a special algorithm to process the surface temperature on the forehead in order to provide a body temperature comparable to the conventional ones (Axilla, Oral, Rectal Core). This algorithm was designed many years ago, was tested on many patients and by many engineers in many hospitals all over the world, and it is continuously verified and updated, especially after having been used in many international airports and hospitals during SARS in 2003 and Swine Flu in 2009.

THERMOFOCUS 01500 series User Manual PREFACE Congratulations! You have just bought the most modern and safest device to measure body temperature. Thermofocus is convenient and easy to use. Indeed, it is the first “non-contact” medical thermometer. The device enables the temperature of adults and children to be taken without touching the skin, simply by moving the thermometer close to the forehead at the distance indicated by the device. With Thermofocus there is no need to place the thermometer in any part of your baby’s body. A sleeping baby will not be woken when
HOW IT WORKS Thermofocus receives infrared emissions from the body, and in particular from the forehead. The forehead is the ideal part of the body from which to take a temperature because it is supplied by the temporal artery, which receives blood through the aorta and the carotid artery, guaranteeing a considerable flow of blood. Moreover, the forehead is the only part of the body close to the brain, which is not covered in hair. At every measurement, Thermofocus carries out every hundredth of a second, a sequence of 125 readings, which are amplified and computed by its sophisticated microprocessor, together with the value of the ambient room temperature, until the correct temperature is shown on the display. It is important to be aware that no single “normal” temperature applies to everyone: each person has his/her own temperature, which changes not only during the day, but also according to certain physical activities undertaken by the subject (for example, if a baby has been crying). Moreover, an individual’s temperature may be different in different regions of the body, and may be influenced by the ambient temperature and other external factors, depending on how the temperature is being taken. Until now, all methods of measuring temperature involved a certain inconvenience to the subject, which can be stressful to a mother seeking to know her baby’s temperature but concerned about hurting or causing distress. The normal temperature taken from the forehead of a healthy person, using Thermofocus, can vary between 95°F (35°C) and 100.4°F (37.5°C), but in an adult, it can also be below 95°F (35°C). It is useful to know the normal temperature of each member of the family when in good health and at various times of day, in order to be able to detect a potential fever. Fill in the following, simple chart and use it for reference. If you decide to consult a doctor, inform him/her of the type of measurement you have taken and the normal temperature under healthy conditions.
HOW TO USE THERMOFOCUS Taking the temperature from the forehead
Sweating: taking the temperature from the neck When the fever is going down the forehead may perspire making its temperature too low. In this case it’s possible to take the temperature from a distance at the neck about 1 inch (2,5 cm) below the outer ear (auricle) for adults and 0,4 inches (1 cm) for babies (fig. 6). Proceed as directed for forehead readings (use the “on” button for 0700 models or the “face” button for other models). The accuracy cannot be guaranteed, but it can be considered a reasonable approximation of body temperature and an indicator of fever. This measurement is particularly indicated for adults also where the forehead reading is affected by oil or cosmetics. Taking the temperature from the navel or from the axilla If a baby is restless, crying or has a perspiring forehead, or if it proves difficult to take a temperature from the forehead, the reading can be taken from the belly, just on the navel, or from the axilla. It is very important to carry this out while the baby is normally dressed. Simply lift his/her clothes immediately before taking the temperature, in order to avoid heat loss from the belly. Measurement is not as accurate as the forehead measurement and should only be used as an alternative when a forehead measurement is not possible. WARNING: taking the temperature from the navel or the axilla is recommended only for children or for adults when there is no hair to interfere with the reading.
Other measurements Thermofocus can also be used to take other temperatures, using the same method as for the navel (use the “home” button). For the 0700 models, use the “on” button and subtract the value written on the silver sticker from the value shown on the display. For example:
MEMORY FUNCTION In some models, there is a memory function, which allows the values of the last 9 readings to be recalled. To activate the memory when the thermometer is on, press the “Mem” button; the display will show the value of the most recent measurement followed by the number 1 and the RE (record) signal.
CLEANING CLEANING THE GILT GUIDE WAVE CLEANING THE BODY OF THE THERMOMETER DO NOT USE the thermometer for at least 30 minutes after cleaning. ROOM CALIBRATION (not available on the 0700 models) If the device is handled for too long, or stored in a place where the temperature varies a lot, a countdown may appear on the display, depending on the model. This means that the unit will need time to stabilize and recalibrate itself. You have 3 different possibilities: 1. Automatic Quick Calibration System (AQCS): wait until the countdown comes to an end without touch it; if the room temperature continues to vary, or if the device is still being handled, the amount of time needed for the calibration will constantly be re-evaluated. As a result, the countdown will also reset itself. It is possible to take a temperature during the countdown, but accuracy is not guaranteed, especially if the temperature continues to rise. At the end of the countdown, the device is capable of measuring with enough accuracy. During the following stand-by the symbol “RE” will mean that the thermometer has been quickly stabilised. 2. Manual Quick Calibration System (MQCS): as an alternative you can quickly get an accurate room temperature when the thermometer is in stand-by and if the room temperature falls between 60.8 /104.0°F (16 to 40°C) by proceeding as follows: The MQCS may also be used when there is no countdown, should you need to change rooms which have different temperatures. This system also enables the thermometer to take good temperatures. Also in this case during the following stand-by the symbol “RE” will mean that the thermometer has been quickly stabilised. 3. Normal room calibration: in order to obtain the best possible measurement, let the thermometer stabilize itself completely. You have to wait 10/30 minutes according to the difference of temperature. How to change the reading from CELSIUS (°C) Depending on the country of destination your thermometer has been set up to: 1. With the thermometer off (0700 models) or in standby mode (01500 models), press the “on” button (0700 models) or the “face” button (01500 models) and hold it down; after about 8 seconds, the visualization on the display changes showing in rotation the following combinations: 3. When the word “READY” appears the thermometer will be ready to take a measurement. You can change only one setting at a time.

How it works
Thermofocus collects at distance the infrared emissions that all the objects and the living beings diffuse in relation with the body’s superficial characteristics and in a bigger proportion when the body temperature is high.
Thermofocus takes the body temperature on the forehead. The forehead is the perfect place where to take the temperature because it is supplied by the temporal artery, that receives blood from the aorta and the carotid which ensure a significant blood flow in that area; moreover the forehead is the only part of the head in direct contact with the brain that is not covered with hair.
The brain is the most delicate organ of our body and it is the one that can be more damaged by temperature excesses.
At the same time the head is the first part of the body that changes its temperature when in a feverish state, both when fever is raising and when it is getting lower.
What is the normal temperature?
It is very important to know that it does not exist an only one “normal” temperature for everybody: everybody has his own temperature that varies during the day also on the basis of the person’s physical or mental activities (the cry in case of a baby). Moreover, the temperature changes from area to area and it can be influenced by the external temperature and by various factors, according to the kind of measurement. Also the temperature differences between the various areas (frontal, oral, axillary, rectal, tympanic) changes from person to person.
Following the dissipation of heat that the non-protected parts of the body undergo, the normal temperature that can be taken on a person’s forehead is usually lower than the one of other covered parts. For this reason, Thermofocus’ internal software automatically applies a correction to give a value that is approximately comparable to the oral temperature (that is usually lower than rectal one, with a variable value between 0,3 and 0,8°C). The temperature taken with Thermofocus on the forehead of a healthy person can usually vary from 35 to 38°C, but in some cases, above all in adults and in elderly people, it can be lower than 35°C.
A person who has a forehead temperature that is usually low, will have a lower feverish state’s threshold if compared to a person whose temperature is normally higher and vice versa.
For this reason, to better assess possible feverish states, it is convenient to know the temperature of every single family member, when in ideal health conditions and in the various moments of the day.
The instrument does not require additional costs and particular cares.
The only necessary maintenance, when the instrument is not used, is simply to avoid that dust or dirt enter in the golden wave guide placed inside the instrument’s prod, protecting it with its protective cap.

Thermofocus is the non-contact thermometer, designed to allow you measuring your baby’s temperature without even touching him/her. You know that sometimes the body temperature measurement is not easy for you and it is irritating for your child, also because when the babies are ill, they are often distrustful and irritable. And what should we say about the disappointment you feel when, having to check your baby’s temperature, you are obliged to wake him/her up during the night, maybe after hours of inconsolable cry? Today, on the contrary, with Thermofocus measuring your baby’s temperature becomes a sweet gesture, just like a caress. If your baby is sleeping, he/she will not have to be woken up and if he/she is awake, will not be frightened, but he/she will be curious and eager to play with you and Thermofocus. |

«In many cases, the child is convinced to take part in a game, […]. For me it has been common to see that the child tried to grab the instrument to play with it, since these little lights were not frightening for him/her at all.» Dr. Catia E. Osio – University of Milan II De Marchi Paediatric Clinic |

Thermofocus has been designed for your baby, but it can be used by all your family members. Since it does never get in contact with the forehead, it is by far the most hygienic thermometer and it does not need any disinfection action. Moreover, Thermofocus can perform any measurement apart from the one on the forehead, on object and on other parts of the body. |
Thermofocus is a vanguard thermometer, since it matches the advantages of its comfort, the speed in the measurement-taking and its hygienic quality, this latter being a fundamental factor above all if we think of consulting rooms or hospitals. Since it never gets in contact with the forehead, it can be used to take the temperature in all patients without having to intervene with any disinfection operation or without any kind of discomfort for the patient.
Besides the body temperature’s measurement, a doctor can use Thermofocus, using the button “home”, to scan the temperature in a certain area of the skin, comparing it to the surrounding area or to the symmetrically specular one (two legs, two feet etc.), it is then possible to find anomalies due to inflammations, circulatory problems, etc. If it is necessary, of course, it is possible to use it on open or healing wounds (even on internal organs during surgical operations since there is no contact between the thermometer and the part on which the temperature has to be taken).
Unlike other thermometers that require disinfection after each use or expensive hygienic disposable covers, Thermofocus does not require anything like this at all. And with savings that for a hospital becomes very important. Usually the costs of hygienic caps vary from 2 to 10 Euro cents (according to the kind of thermometer). Let’s suppose that they have an average cost of 5 cents each. Let’s also suppose that we have to take 4 measurements a day in a 25-patient ward with an auricular thermometer. We have a cost of 0,05 x 4 x 25 = 5 € a day. Let’s multiply by 365 and we get a cost of 1.825 € for each thermometer! Which is money that is literally wasted! Moreover the battery consumption is certainly lower with Thermofocus. Then, if we estimate the time saved by the nurses for each measurement (cap insertion, probe positioning in the auditory canal, cap removal) we can suppose that each Thermofocus can allow savings of more than 4.000 € per year!
Sometime the temperature reading is too low. Why?
- the lens may be soiled: the presence of dust or dirt filters the passage of the infrared emissions; as s consequence, Thermofocus will take a lower reading than the real body temperature.
It is necessary to clean the waveguide gently, using a cotton swab that has been slightly dampened with alcohol. Don’t use the thermometer for at least 30 minutes after cleaning. - The forehead can show signs of sweat or an oxygen mask is present or the subject is elderly. This can result in a low reading In all the above cases, you can take the temperature reading, again from a distance, on th eyelid (answer 10). – Oils or make-up con be present. This can results in a low reading. You can take the temperature reading, again from a distance, on the eyelid or on the neck (answer 10).
If I take several consecutive readings, my Thermofocus detects different temperatures (more than 0.2°C difference). Why?
Probably, the thermometer is not always aimed on the same spot and at the correct distance from the center of the forehead, or it has been moved before the lights flashed: make sure you keep the thermometer perpendicular to the center of the forehead and at the correct distance indicated by the aiming system, and keep it steady while the lights flash. Changing the reading point on the forehead will give incorrect results. – The thermometer was stored in another room (or even in a drawer, cabinet, etc.) at a different temperature than the room where the thermometer is used. Make the MQCS or wait until the countdown has run its course (AQCS) or for 10/30 minutes before taking any other measurements, so that the device can stabilize on its own.
Are there any external factors which can modify the measurement?
Usually not, provided that you consider as a normal situation a hill baby laying in bed at home. However, there may be some situations affected by external factors. In particular, Thermofocus should not be used on a person directly exposed to the sun, to sources of heat (a radiator or a chimney) or cold (outside during in winter, air conditioning) or again on a person that is training sport or it has just finished it (in fact, while walking, the forehead get colder because of the surrounding air).
Is it possible to take the temperature to a person coming from another room?
Before taking the temperature to a person coming from an ambient at a different temperature than the room where the thermometer is used (for example from outside), you must give them the time to stabilize themselves into the new room. To do this we suggest that the person stays in the room for some minutes, calm and still, possibly sitting down or laying in bed.
How can I make the MQCS (Manual Quick Calibration System – only 01500A3 model)?
The alternative is to promptly correct the thermometer temperature, adapting it to the real temperature of the room where the reading is to be taken. Proceed as follows (the room temperature must be in the 10-40°C (50-104°F) temperature range):1. with the thermometer in stand-by mode press and release the “face” and “home” button simultaneously: the symbol CAL will appear;
2.Within 10 seconds, open the cap and, focus the thermometer on an internal wall (not the inside of an external wall) or wardrobe with uniform temperature and at a point approximately 30 to 60 inches (80/150 cm) from the floor. Press the “home”
button until the temperature reading is set squarely between the two arches
3. release the button: the lights flash slowly and the display shows the room temperature. To ensure a reliable temperature reading, do not focus the thermometer on an outside wall, window, source of heating or cooling (radiator, air conditioner, lamp, computer, surface in contact with the human body, etc.).
4. The thermometer is ready to take a reading.
Manual quick calibration (MQCS) can also be performed without the countdown if, for example, you need to move between rooms at different temperatures.
This system, too, enables the thermometer to take sufficiently accurate readings. In this case, when the thermometer is in stand-by mode, “MQCS” appears on the display indicating that manual quick calibration has been performed. It is also possible to just leave the thermometer in the room and wait 10/30 minutes, depending on the difference of temperature.
How does the AQCS (Automatic Quick Calibration system) work?
If the thermometer is handled at length or if there is a significant temperature difference with respect to the room temperature, a countdown will appear on the display indicating that you should wait until automatic temperature calibration has been completed. Without touching the thermometer, wait until the countdown has run its course and automatic quick calibration is completed. The countdown will continue updating as long as differences in temperature are detected (for example, because the thermometer has been handled).. You can take a reading before the countdown has run its course, although, in this case, accuracy cannot be guaranteed, particularly if the temperature is rising. At the end of the countdown, the thermometer can take sufficiently accurate readings. When the thermometer is in stand-by mode, “RE” appears on the display indicating that automatic quick calibration has been performed.
Is the temperature reading detected with Thermofocus the same as that taken with other thermometers and in other parts of the body?
The temperature reading detected with Thermofocus is normally very similar, but not necessary equal, to the temperature taken with other thermometers. When it is set in the oral or rectal mode, the temperature is very similar respectively to the oral and the internal rectal measurement taken with other thermometers. To obtain this result, the software of Thermofocus automatically applies a correction factor that compensates the heat dissipation from uncovered parts of the body (such as the forehead).
Moreover, the temperature differs from one area of the body to another (armpit, mouth, rectum, forehead) and that differences are not valid for everyone, but each person has his/her own body temperature:: for instance, the rectal and the oral temperature can, on some subjects, differ for less than 1°C (1.8°F), while be much more than 1°C (1.8°F) different in others.
For this reason, sometimes the forehead temperature can be different from the temperature measured in other parts of the body.
To correctly judged a fever, you need to know the normal temperature of your family members when they are in good health conditions and at various times of the day
For example, a person having a very low temperature in good health conditions will have a lower mark fever compared to others usually having a higher temperature. To help you with this, download the table in pdf format (available in English,French, and Spanish languages) fill it out and keep it as a reference.
Can I use Thermofocus even if it comes from a room having a different temperature?
All infrared thermometers must know the room temperature, and so all manufacturers suggest to wait for a certain time (usually from 10 to 30 minutes or more depending on the difference of the temperature) before using the thermometer when you come from another room at a different temperature then the room where the thermometer is used. With Thermofocus, you do not need for waiting, thanks to 2 exclusives patented systems for quick stabilization: the AQCS and the MQCS.
Can I change the setting from Celsius to Fahrenheit or vice versa?
Depending on where it is to be sold, your thermometer leaves the factory preset to: Celsius (°C) or Fahrenheit (°F). These settings can be modified as follows:
When the thermometer is in stand-by mode, press and hold the “mem” button (or “face” or “on” button in the older models); after about 8 seconds, the visualization on the display changes showing the settings in sequence: °C, °F, AXILLA, ORAL, RECTAL. When the preferred setting appears, release the button. After a few seconds, the thermometer will be ready for a measurement in the selected setting.
Can I change the setting from oral to rectal and axilla or vice versa?
Depending on where it is to be sold, your thermometer leaves the factory referred to AXILLARY, ORAL or RECTAL temperature readings These settings can be modified as follows:
When the thermometer is in stand-by, press and hold the “mem” button (or “face” o “on” button in the older models); after about 8 seconds, the visualization on the display changes, showing the settings in sequence: °C, °F, AXILLA, ORAL, RECTAL. When the preferred setting appears, release the button.
After a few seconds, the thermometer will be ready for a measurement in the selected setting. When the thermometer is set in RECTAL mode, the reading is 0.6°C (0.8°F) higher than an ORAL reading. When it is set in ORAL mode, the reading is 0.2°C (0.4°F) higher an AXILLARY reading.
Can I make my Thermofocus shut down immediately after the last use?
Depending on where it is to be sold, your Thermofocus (01500A3 model) leaves the factory preset with the display off when in stand-by mode (“Energy Savings”) or display on and showing the room temperature for 4 hours before shutting off (“Peak Performance”) , These settings can be modified as follows: When the thermometer is in stand-by mode, press and hold the “mem” button (or “face” button in the older models); after about 8 seconds, the visualization on the display changes, showing the settings in sequence: °C, °F, AXILLA, ORAL, RECTAL, “home” on, “home” off. When the desired setting appears, release the button (“home “ on means that the display will show the ambient temperature for 4 hours before shutting off, “home” off means that it will shut down immediately after the 20 second interval after the last reading.
Does the batteries’ consumption increase if Thermofocus displays the room temperature when it is in stand-by mode?
When the thermometer remains idle for 20 seconds, it reverts to stand-by mode and will display the room temperature for 4 hours before shutting off. When it is on stand-by, even if the display stays on visualizing the room temperature, it does not remain active, which means that the consumption stays lower than that of a cell phone when not in use. The device autonomy with new batteries is of about 3 years or 10.000 measurements, depending on use.
Why Thermofocus shows the ambient temperature? (only 01500A3 model)
Besides the comfort to have a clinical thermometer which works also as an ambient thermometer, the main purpose is to check that the temperature of the thermometer is constantly the same as the real ambient temperature in order to make measurements with the thermometer calibrated.
After the first measurement, how long do I have to wait before I can take another one?
With Thermofocus, you can immediately take another reading.
What happens if the red lights are unintentionally directed towards the eyes?
The lights are harmless. THEY ARE NOT LASER BEAMS!
Is there an area alternative to the center of the forehead?
We suggest to take the temperature reading again from a distance, by taking a close-up scan of the closed eyelid, using the “face ”button. No need to worry that your child could open its eyes while you are taking the reading: the lights are harmless. Performances are not guaranteed, but such reading can be considered a valid approximation of one’s body temperature and a fever’s indicator.
Is there any situations in which Thermofocus should not be used in the center of the forehead?
The forehead temperature reading can be affected by profuse sweating or if an oxygen mask is present or if the subject is elderly.
In case of sweating, dry the forehead is not enough, as the low readings do not depend on the sweat drops, but on the dissipation of heat which occurs when sweating.
The oxygen masks are not hermetic and so the oxygen can make the forehead cold: the temperature reading would not be correct.
A low vascularization of the forehead may occur in elderly people. In all the above cases, the temperature detected on the forehead will be lower than the real body temperature.
Why is the forehead the ideal site for taking a temperature reading?
The forehead is crossed by the temporal artery and is the only part of the body in direct contact with the brain and that is not covered by hair. Furthermore, the head is the first part of the body to change temperature as a fever, rises and falls. This characteristic is very useful, as it can give predictive information of how the fever is changing. This is why, sometimes, it is possible to find the fever on the forehead and not in other parts of the body or viceversa. This simply means that the fever is rising or falling.
Which is Thermofocus range of work?
The measurement range of the body temperature (“face” button) is between 34 and 42.5 °C (93.2/108.5 °F).
The measurement range of temperature of objects, liquids and surfaces (“home” button) is between 1 and 55°C (33.8/131.0°F).
Thermofocus can operate in rooms where the temperature is between 16 to 40 °C (60.8-104°F). It is possible to use the thermometer also in rooms where the temperature is lower than 16C (60.8°F), although accuracy and the operating range are not guaranteed.
Can Thermofocus be used to take the body temperature to people of any age?
For the comfort of its use, its non-invasive methods and its quick measurements, Thermofocus has been designed for children, but adults can also use it. However, it is important to bear in mind that sometimes in elderly people, the temperature taken with Thermofocus on the forehead could be lower than the correct body temperature.
Why is it so important for the thermometer to be at the correct reading distance?
The “field of view”, where every infrared sensor works, is cone-shaped: this means that the farer you go from the surface, the bigger the cone’s base – the area of which you take the reading – becomes.
If, for example, the distance from the center of the forehead is bigger than expected, the thermometer will include in the measurement area also the temperature of the eyebrows, of the eyes or of the hair. If the distance gets even bigger, it will include the temperature of the whole face.
In all these cases, the reading temperature would not be correct as it would be an average of all the parts of the face included in the “field of view”.
What is the correct reading distance?
The thermometer itself will tell you the correct reading distance, by means of its patented optical aiming system: if the thermometer is too close, or too far away from the skin, you will see two single or blurred points, respectively. When you see only one point, the thermometer is at the right distance for a correct reading.
How does Thermofocus work?
Thermofocus detects the infrared radiation naturally emitted by the body and, in particular, from the human forehead. In just a few hundredths of a second your Thermofocus takes a series of 125 readings, Its sophisticated microprocessor then amplifies and processes this information along with the room temperature, detected from a thermocouple probe incorporated within the sensor. The data are compared with the parameters contained in the memory, and the results of these processing is the temperature showed on the display.
What are Thermofocus’ advantages?
Thermofocus is able to take the body temperature without touching the skin: if your baby is sleeping, you will not wake him up; and, if he is awake, he will not be scared but, on the contrary, will be attracted and willing to play with you and Thermofocus.
Its optical aiming system indicates the correct reading distance, that is essential to obtain accurate measurements.
It is truly easy to use, reliable, safe and very fast. Moreover, there are no breaking risks, as in the case of mercury thermometers. Finally, unlike other thermometers, Thermofocus is hygienic as there is no need to disinfect it or to use hygienic protection. These features reduce in fact the risk of contaminations.
